Overview

Observability for agentic AI systems goes beyond traditional application monitoring. It requires tracking AI-specific behaviors, decision-making processes, and quality metrics alongside standard operational metrics. The goal is to maintain full visibility into what agents are doing, why they are doing it, and how well they are performing.

Core Observability Objectives

Performance Monitoring

  • Track response times, throughput, and resource utilization
  • Monitor model inference latency and token processing rates
  • Measure system availability and reliability metrics
  • Identify bottlenecks in agent reasoning and tool execution chains

Behavior Analysis

  • Understand agent decision-making processes and reasoning paths

Observability Pillars for AI Agents

Traces

End-to-end traces capture the full execution path of an agent request, including: - LLM calls with prompts and completions - Tool invocations and their results - Memory reads and writes - Sub-agent calls in multi-agent systems - Latency at each step

Metrics

Aggregated numerical data for dashboards and alerting: - Time-series data for trend analysis - Histograms for latency distribution - Counters for event frequency - Gauges for current state (e.g., active sessions)

Logs

Structured event records for debugging and audit: - Agent reasoning steps and intermediate outputs - Error messages and stack traces - User inputs and agent responses (with PII masking) - Configuration changes and deployments

Evaluations

Implementation Principles

Instrument Early

Build observability into agent architecture from the start rather than retrofitting. Use OpenTelemetry-compatible instrumentation for portability across platforms.

Correlate Everything

Use correlation IDs to link traces, logs, and metrics across distributed agent systems. This is critical for debugging multi-agent workflows.

Balance Detail with Cost

Full trace capture can be expensive at scale. Implement sampling strategies that capture 100% of errors and a representative sample of successful requests.

Protect Privacy

Implement PII detection and masking before logging user inputs. Ensure observability data is subject to the same data governance policies as production data.
